Is Social Media Is Traumatizing Us?
This Huffpost article by “Stephanie Barnes” highlights how our minds have reached a point in our evolution where we have become over stimulated mentally. The Cross of Planning (1615-2027) is the Age of the Mind. We are moving into the Emotional Age. Our minds dwell in the past and project into the future. The mind doesn’t know the now even exists. Mental anxiety is a common condition, and is on the rise thanks to the information overload that is social media.
The mind does not have the capacity to understand our emotions. It tries to explain the joy of the high, and the despair of the low. It takes stock of what is going on around us as we experience these emotions and tries to catalog them according to external circumstances. This is when it starts to point blame on outside influences and misinterpret what you are feeling. Our minds are becoming emotionalized. The constant bombardment of information is a recipe for a highly traumatizing experience because of the extreme highs and lows the mind is experiencing.
I can feel it bubbling up in me as I write this and how my mind interprets what I’m feeling. We are evolving and mainly ignorant of what is happening and filtering more than we can reasonably handle.
According to Katie Day Good, “Social media can desensitized us to tragedies by presenting us with too much information, information taken out of context, misinformation or disinformation (information designed to deceive).”
We are so afraid to miss out on “important information” that we spend more and more time on our devices. Taking time off every once in a while and giving the mind a much needed break can help soothe your anxiety. A walk in nature is the best medicine.
